Description from the seller

Luluwa statuette – rare typology, seated posture – DRC

Rare and very beautiful Luluwa statuette (Kasai, DRC), of an uncommon typology and particularly appreciated by collectors for its sculptural strength. The seated, dense and compact posture gives the work an immediate presence: a stable figure, almost “architectural,” where each volume seems placed with intention.

The style stands out for its controlled abstraction. The face, powerfully simplified, presents broad planes and features reduced to essentials, reinforcing this modern aesthetic typical of the finest Luluwa pieces. The body is organized around a prominent belly and a mass-based construction, with the limbs treated as solid shapes, yielding an almost geometric finish. Seen from the profile as from the back, the sculpture reveals a beautiful continuity of volumes: the nape, shoulders, and pelvis weave together in taut curves, giving the whole a genuine 'sculpturality' suitable for a collection.

The patina is deep, ancient, and highly seductive, with a marked lustre on the contact areas (head, chest, thighs), and warm nuances that emerge beneath the dark brown. These contrasts emphasize the quality of the wood and the finesse of the surface work, while also attesting to prolonged handling. Also visible are carving details that reinforce authenticity and the 'hand of the sculptor' reading.

A rare work in its typology and highly convincing in its presence: ideal for a high-end selection focused on abstraction in Central Africa, and perfect on display as a “statement” piece.

Overview of our expertise firm:

Based in Belgium, our appraisal and sales house has been assisting collectors and families for many years, with a simple approach: seriousness, transparency and service. We enjoy a solid reputation among tribal art enthusiasts and are among the leading sellers on Catawiki, where we count ourselves among the oldest merchants (more than 8 years).

We have specialized in valuing and ensuring the liquidation and dispersion of dozens of family collections, and have sold thousands of objects in partnership with private individuals, notaries, estates, inheritances, and collection cessations. Our track record speaks for itself: hundreds of evaluations nearing 100% positive feedback, an indicator that is worth more than any discussion of our commitment and reliability.

Pieces that have passed through our hands are today in prestigious collections and, for some, have joined museum institutions — a guarantee of the quality and consistency of our selection throughout the year. We regularly offer no-reserve sales.
