Description from the seller

Holy figurine of the 'Black Madonna' of Altötting in a display case. The case is made of brass and glazed. It has a standing format with beveled top corners, featuring chased border decoration in a shell shape and a hanging eyelet. It contains a small figurine of the Madonna of Altötting in a brocade dress.

Dating: circa 1780-1820

Dimensions: 10.2 x 6.4 x 1.8 cm

Condition: good, with some dust inside the glass. (see photos)

The miraculous grace image of Altötting was carved from linden wood in 1330. The early Gothic image depicts a standing Mother of God with Child. It was colloquially called the Black Madonna of Ötting, but nowadays the name Black Madonna has gained prominence. Over the centuries, the image has become blackened by the smoke of candles. On September 11, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI visited Altötting and gifted his ring, which he wore during his tenure as a cardinal. The ring is now located on the scepter of the image.
