Description from the seller
Alouisius W.L. van Delden, known as Loek van Delden, had shown an interest in drawing since his youth. In 1945, he worked at the Toonder Studios, but this was discontinued after three months due to his military service. In 1948, he created his first solo comic strip, 'Mac Muzzle and the Secret of the Golden Buddha.' It was drawn in a style inspired by Toonder and appeared in various newspapers. Around this time, he also made illustrations for Weekblad voor de Roomse Jeugd. In 1949, Van Delden established his own studio called Studio Avan. The studio's first publication was a children's book titled 'How the Strawberries Got Their Green Tips,' followed by a series of comic book adaptations of Dutch folk tales. This series included 'The Three Kousenkooplui,' 'Smart Peter and the Found Money,' and especially 'Smidje Verholen.' Based on an old Limburg story, the latter was published in newspapers and in book form. The success of 'Smidje Verholen' led to an additional 18 stories. Smidje Verholen was very popular, and it is the comic strip that made Loek van Delden famous.
Studio Avan also engaged other artists, such as Frits Kloezeman, Raymond Bär van Hemmersweil, Jan van Haasteren, Jan van Reek, and Willy van Giffen. In 1953, the studio started a new newspaper comic strip called 'Brigadier Piet' (although it was printed as 'Karel Kleuntje' in some newspapers). Loek van Delden was associated with an advertising agency between 1960 and 1964. In 1985, some 'Smidje Verholen' stories were reprinted in the Frisian language. Studio Avan, located in Van Delden's house in The Hague, was closed in 1992. Van Delden moved to a nursing home the following year and passed away in December 2004.
