Description from the seller
Silver wall-mounted holy water font depicting the Holy Trinity – Germany, 19th century (marked Hanau)
Magnificent silver holy water font, embossed and chased, with a profusion of Baroque-inspired decoration. The composition represents the Holy Trinity: God the Father holding the globe and supporting the cross of his crucified Son, surmounted by the radiant dove of the Holy Spirit.
In the lower register, the Agnus Dei (Mystic Lamb) rests on the book with seven seals, a symbol of the redemptive sacrifice.
The side decoration is enlivened with winged putti and angels holding the Arma Christi (instruments of the Passion: nails, column, ladder, lance, etc.). The lower border, highly detailed, features a band of cherub heads within a scrolling foliage pattern.
The holy water basin, in the shape of a gadrooned shell, is deeply molded and polished, contrasting with the matte chiseled background.
High quality work, typical of the goldsmiths of Hanau (Germany), active at the end of the 19th century, specializing in pieces in the old style (baroque and rococo).
The hallmark visible on the reverse corresponds to a goldsmith's mark from Hanau
Condition: Very good condition, minimal signs of wear, beautiful original patina
