Description from the seller
Rare Votive Ordination Frame – Sacred Heart in wax – 1891-1895 – France
Large Catholic votive painting made to commemorate the successive stages of the ordination of a clergyman between 1891 and 1895.
Presented under convex glass in an original blackened wooden frame.
At the center, a Sacred Heart in modeled wax, encircled by twisted metal wires and surrounded by rays. Around it, several hand-painted medallions (bone or ivory) indicate the dates of the different orders:
• Tonsure – June 30, 1891
• Minor Orders – June 28, 1893
• Subdiaconate – June 29, 1894
• Deaconate – December 22, 1894
• Priesthood – March 30, 1895
The decoration is completed by cut-out fleurs-de-lis, a crowned escutcheon, and the monogram “G”, probably the initial of the priest being celebrated. Latin inscription at the top: “Dominus pars haereditatis meae” (Ps 15:5).
Original red velvet background, gilt and mother-of-pearl metal elements. French religious work, late 19th century.
Very good overall condition, colours well preserved, slight signs of age on the velvet. Convex glass intact.
A typical piece of devotional work produced in religious communities at the end of the 19th century, and rare in such a complete condition.
