Description from the seller
Cimier - wood - Tiwara - Mali
The Tiwara, or Ci Wara, headdresses masks are wooden masks emblematic of Bambara culture in Mali. They traditionally depict a mythical animal, often a stylized antelope, symbolizing agriculture and fertility. These masks are worn during ritual dances intended to honor the earth and encourage good harvests, embodying the harmony between humans, nature, and the spiritual world.
Characterized by slender shapes, long and fine horns, as well as geometric patterns engraved or carved, the Tiwara crests combine abstraction and naturalism. Each piece reflects a subtle balance between dynamism and serenity, embodying both the strength and grace necessary for agricultural life. These ritual objects bear witness to an ancestral craftsmanship still alive among the Bambara.
