An iconic cabinet card showing Sarah Bernhardt, by American photographer Napoleon Sarony, his signature and address in New York in the white margin of the card, and annotated "Sarah Bernhardt". The backside shows the stamp of E. Ziegler, a famous 19th century French distributor and editor based in Paris.

Napoléon Sarony (March 9, 1821 – November 9, 1896)[1][2] was an American lithographer and photographer. He was a highly popular portrait photographer, best known for his portraits of the stars of late-19th-century American theater. In 1876, he moved his operations to what became his more famous studio building at 37 Union Square. He extensively photographed the legendary French actress Sarah Bernhardt during her world tours, capturing her iconic image in his New York studio around the 1880s, solidifying her as an international star through his albumen prints. Sarony reportedly paid the internationally famous stage actress Sarah Bernhardt $1,500 to pose for his camera.
