Description from the seller
BAUHAUS-TRADITION | Iconic Midcentury Modern Cake Plate – 'Dundee' Decor, Schramberg, Eva Fritz-Lindner, Germany, circa 1955
This rare and expressive cake or serving plate features the famous 'Dundee' decor from the Schramberger Majolika-Fabrik (SMF), produced in southwestern Germany in the early 1950s. The distinctive grid of red, green, blue, and black lines on a white background reflects the modernist ideals of post-Bauhaus or New Bauhaus graphic design and midcentury Constructivism. Diameter approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm), with only minimal flea bites.
Named after the Scottish city of Dundee—historically closely associated with tartan patterns—this design reinterprets textile geometry and translates it into a ceramic abstraction. The interplay of clearly structured color fields and fine linear rhythms conveys optimism and formal clarity, typical of West German post-war design culture.
Each piece was individually hand-painted using stencils, giving each plate a subtle individuality. 'Dundee' is one of the most sought-after décors of the SMF and is especially valued among collectors of midcentury design ceramics.
The style is often compared to early works by Eva Fritz-Lindner (1933–2017), a renowned ceramic artist who studied in Germany as well as in Murano (Italy). She was awarded, among others, the Grand Prix in 1956, the Baden-Württemberg Art Prize in 1958, and the Silver Medal at the International Ceramic Exhibition Prague in 1962.
A museum highlight for collectors of bauhaus-inspired ceramics and classic modernist vintage design.
