Description from the seller
Etruscan 'Bucchero-Nero' ceramic Villanovan Kyathos with incised decoration Bucchero nero paste
Rare countermarks in the background
Elegant Etruscan kyathos for drinking dating from the 10th to the 9th century BC, from the Villanova culture, made of black terracotta (bucchero nero) with thin sides and a raised handle. The handle is finely crafted, featuring an opening near the lip and topped with two buttons. It is decorated with incised patterns that encircle the shoulder. The piece has a bulging bottom with a slight hollow in the center to provide stability. The blackware terracotta, called 'impasto,' was the first type of bucchero nero pottery. This jug was finished with a slip varnish before being polished (probably with a wooden spatula), then decorated with incisions and finally baked. The decoration, engraved all over the shoulder, consists of oblique strokes. Originates from Etruria, Villanova culture.
Provenance: formerly collected in Avignon 60 years ago.
The seller guarantees that he acquired this piece in accordance with all national and international laws related to the ownership of cultural property. Provenance statement seen by Catawiki.
The seller will ensure that any necessary permits, such as an export license, are arranged; he will inform the buyer about the status of these if it takes more than a few days.
