Description from the seller
Antique Chinese “Eight Immortals” Temple Rug — Handwoven Wool
A rare and captivating handwoven Chinese temple rug, richly decorated with the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian) — legendary Taoist figures symbolizing good fortune, longevity, and spiritual enlightenment.
This exceptional piece features deep indigo and ivory tones, delicately balanced to highlight the divine figures standing on clouds, surrounded by traditional Chinese symbols of prosperity and purity — such as bats, lotus flowers, and auspicious clouds.
The inscription on the upper field appears to honor a temple dedication, with a reference to the Qianlong period (1739) — a symbolic nod to China’s golden era of art and craftsmanship.
Although likely woven in the early to mid-20th century, it reflects the elegance and spiritual essence of imperial design.
