Megalodon (/ˈmɛɡələdɒn/ MEG-əl-ə-don; Otodus megalodon), meaning "big tooth", is an extinct species of mackerel shark that lived approximately 23 to 3.6 million years ago (Mya), from the Early Miocene to the Pliocene epochs.
