Description from the seller
Tin foil with an imitation book motif and engravings in Renaissance style.
Very unusual and striking bottle in book form, with 'raised bands' on the 'spine' and extensive decoration on both the front and back. Marked on the bottom. Exact dating is unknown, but the bottle definitely dates from the 19th century, probably the middle of the 19th century, when the Renaissance Revival became a popular and widespread style, especially in the Germanic world.
Although we cannot definitively determine the origin of the bottle, we strongly suspect it comes from the German-speaking world, where the Renaissance Revival was almost embraced as a national style in a region eager for historical roots to support its nationalist ambitions. The heavy bottle – heavy both in appearance and weight, namely 1.2 kg – measures 20 by 14.5 cm and is about 5 cm thick. If you measure from the base of the foot to the top of the handle, the total height is 26.5 cm. This is not an everyday piece of tinwork.
The decoration on the front differs from that on the back. For example, the back is clearly designed more formally with a coat of arms, featuring a majestic lion beneath the shield. The front still has a largely symmetrical design with floral motifs, but the shapes flow more freely, accentuated by the slightly tilted, shield-like central element. Surrounding the decorative panels, both on the front and back, are raised bands with woven metalwork and repeating clover motifs.
General condition in very good shape. Note: because the bottle may contain lead, it is not recommended to use the bottle.
