Description from the seller
Finnish silver sauce boat, crafted in 830 fineness (83% pure silver) circa 1895.
Hallmarks :
830 in rectangular cartouche - probably Finland c.1890-1920 , mostly for export silverware
Makers mark not visible (hard to read)
The piece is a classic helmet-shaped gravy boat, designed for serving sauces or gravies at the table. It features a gracefully curved, boat-like body with a deeply scalloped rim adorned with flowing scrollwork, floral motifs, and undulating wave-like edges that evoke natural forms—a hallmark of Art Nouveau aesthetics. The rim's ornamentation includes chased and embossed swirls and leaves, adding texture and movement to the otherwise smooth, polished silver surface. The spout is elegantly flared and scalloped, allowing for precise pouring, while the opposite side rises to a looped C-shaped handle with intricate foliate and volute detailing, providing both functional grip and decorative flair.
The boat rests on an oval pedestal foot with a fluted and gadrooned border, accented by shell-like lobes and rococo-inspired flourishes at the base, which elevate it slightly for stability and elegance. The interior is plain and polished, showing some signs of age-related tarnish and minor wear consistent with over a century of occasional use, but no major dents or repairs are evident from the images. The exterior exhibits a soft patina, highlighting the craftsmanship in the chased decorations.
Condition quite good, with small scratches & blemishes . Look carefully on pictures
