Description from the seller
Virgen de Feódorov (in Russian, Feódorovskaya Bogomát), one of the most revered Marian icons in Russian tradition.
Iconographic identification
Type: Eleúsa (Virgin of Tenderness).
The Virgin bows her head and rests her cheek on that of the Child, who embraces her with an intimate and affectionate gesture.
Characteristic gestures
El Niño surrounds María's neck and rests her face on his, emphasizing the theme of maternal love and, at the same time, prefiguring suffering.
Registrations
Traditional Greek abbreviations
Mother of God (Meter Theou, Madre de Dios) next to the Virgin.
Jesus Christ with the Child.
Golden background, symbol of divine light and the celestial kingdom.
Dark and deep palette (ochres, reds, and browns), very typical of Russian art.
Sober and expressive modeling of the face, with a melancholic gaze of the Virgin.
Darkened edges and wear suggest an antique icon, probably from the 18th–19th centuries, created in egg tempera on panel.
Spiritual significance
The Virgin of Feódorov not only expresses tenderness, but also:
Maternal protection of the people, especially during times of crisis.
Awareness of Christ's future sacrifice, visible in Mary's solemn expression.
In Russia, it was considered a dynastic and protective icon, closely linked to national history and the imperial house.
An authenticity certificate, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture of Estonia, is provided.
