Description from the seller

Ascension of the Prophet Elijah, known in the Slavic tradition as 'the fiery ascent of Saint Elijah.'

Top inscription

The title, in ecclesiastical Slavic, explicitly alludes to the chariot of fire and the prophet's ascension, following the account of 2 Kings 2:11.

Upper part

Elías appears seated in the chariot of fire, drawn by fiery horses, taken up to heaven.
This reason states that Elijah does not die, but is taken alive by God, foreshadowing the victory over death.

Central scene

The prophet Elijah stands upright, wrapped in his cloak, with a contemplative expression.
It is a 'theological' representation: it does not depict a specific historical moment, but rather the spiritual glorification of the prophet.

Lateral and inferior sections

Disciples and witnesses (especially Elisha, although he is not clearly individualized here).

Angels participating in the celestial transit.

A reclining or fallen character symbolizes human limitation before the divine mystery.

Elías as forerunner: in the Christian tradition, Elías foreshadows Christ's Ascension and the future resurrection.

Fire: symbol of divine presence, purification, and the energy of the Spirit.

Eschatological prophet: Elias is considered a witness of the end times and a key figure of repentance.

Russian icon, temple with an egg on a board.

Dark color palette with hints of gold.

Narrative composition with multiple integrated scenes.

Probable 18th–19th century, showing visible wear due to prolonged devotion.

An authenticity certificate endorsed by the Ministry of Culture of Estonia is provided.
