This Kwele African mask is characterized by its elongated heart-shaped form, almond-shaped eyes, and two vertical horns reminiscent of the antelope, a symbolic animal for the Kwele. Natural white and black pigments cover the surface, highlighting the stylized features. These masks are used during initiation rituals of Bwété or hunting ceremonies, serving as mediators between ancestors and the community. They are worn to purify the village and ensure spiritual protection. The combination of geometric shapes and the sobriety of colors aligns with the specific aesthetic codes of Kwele creation.
