The obverse centrally displays the value '5' of the denomination, surrounded by a two-line inscription that includes the denomination unit 'DEUTSCHE MARK', the year between two stars, the country name 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND', and the mint mark.
On the reverse, there is the German coat of arms eagle.
The border features the inscription 'UNITY AND JUSTICE AND FREEDOM.' The individual words are separated by oak leaves.
