Several Roman legions used a bull as their emblem, most famously Legio III Gallica and Legio X Fretensis. The bull symbol was strongly associated with Julius Caesar, who founded or reorganized many of these legions, and it was also the sacred animal of Venus, the mythical ancestor of Caesar's family (the Julians). Other legions with a bull emblem included Legio V Macedonica, Legio VII Claudia, and Legio IX Hispana.
