Description from the seller

Rare, antique Russian triptych icon depicting the 'Crucifixion of Jesus, Mother of God of Arabia, and other saints,' with two border saints (including the guardian angel) from the 19th century (around 1880).

Hand-painted with egg tempera paints on a wooden panel with a chalk ground.

Typical method of icon making in 18th and 19th century Tsarist Russia. The motifs are rather rare and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon, which was probably created on commission. The painting is quite masterful and detailed (see photos).

Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic crackles (see photos).

Partial restorations are present (see photos). The faces of the saints are particularly expressive and striking (see photos). The saints are labeled. The labels are partly difficult to read.

Both cross pins are attached to the back. The wooden panel is stable and solid. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos). The back of the icon contains quite a few holes from the woodworm in the wood. The woodworm is probably still active.

An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the subject.

All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.

Dimensions: 35.5 x 30.5 x 3 cm
