Description from the seller
Pair of cast bronze candlesticks, 17th century (engraved date 1641)
Northern Italy / Central European area, Baroque context
Extraordinary pair of antique cast bronze candlesticks, made using mold casting technique and finished with chasing, characterized by notable weight, metal thickness, and sculptural quality, elements that attest to their ancient, non-serial production.
The candelieri feature a screwed modular structure, a practical design documented as early as the 17th century for large bronze artifacts, intended to facilitate casting, transportation, and maintenance. The presence of the ancient threaded pin, consistent in wear and oxidation, confirms a historical construction rather than a modern one.
The base is decorated with an anthropomorphic mask in Baroque style, featuring expressive traits, stylized mustache and beard.
Lily motifs and plant decorations are visible.
An oval topped by a crown appears on the body of the base, within which the date '1641' is inscribed, an element of great historical interest.
The incised date is stylistically consistent with the decorative language and the typology of Baroque candelabra from the first half of the 17th century, and it finds comparisons in northern Italian, German, and Scandinavian artifacts from the same period.
Antique bronze with a natural historical patina
Green oxidation traces (copper) consistent with long exposure and aging.
Unfinished interiors, typical of ancient castings.
No modern aggressive polishing.
Very good condition considering its age.
Subtle signs of aging that enhance authenticity and value.
