Gemma Leonardo mechanical construction toy, Delta box, made in Italy from wood and metal, vintage style, dating to 1940–1950, weight 23 kg, dimensions 60 × 32 × 16.5 cm.
Description from the seller
Gemma Leonardo - Mechanical Construction Toy - Delta box - 1940-1950 – Italy
Large Leonardo Mechanical Construction Set complete as shown in the images that are part of the description.
Dimensions: 59/62 cm x 31.5/32.5 cm x 16.5 cm (H), approximately 23.00 kg in weight, with nearly a thousand metal pieces, probably never used, showing some signs due to age.
The box, originally made of wood painted red inside, has two trays on top (three shelves) and a side pocket with a door and closures, where two more trays are inserted.
Even the entire wooden part and hinges are in excellent condition.
The Leonardo metal construction game was produced from 1947 to 1956 by G.E.M.M.A. Giocattoli Elettro Meccanici Minuterie Affini SrL.
GEMMA had three production lines: the 'LEONARDO' Mechanical Constructions, entirely made of steel for sheet metal parts and in zamak for wheels and gears.
I have electric trains in three models with 1, 2, and 3 cars, and a meccano electromechanical set under the French license 'MULTIMOTORE'.
The pieces were reproduced with extreme accuracy in finishing and minute details in the mechanical parts, thus increasing the production costs and consequently the selling price to levels that are too high to be competitive in the market.
Clearly, this great quality contributed to the good/excellent preservation of this set.
However, it should be noted that the gears in the zama alloy were, as is well known, subject to possible (and occasional) deterioration.
There are many Italian companies that, in the post-war period (and even before), copied Meccano Ltd. Liverpool (Bral, Condor, Star, AmiLac), often limited to producing only the basic parts at a lower cost, since Meccano was decidedly expensive.
Gemma, on the other hand, made a different choice, putting into production all the parts designed by Meccano plus some taken from the Marklin Baukasten catalog (it appears she was the only company to reproduce the excavator bucket, a real gem).
The tires are branded original Pirelli. The set has not been checked analytically but appears to be completely intact and perhaps never used.
I recommend consulting the shipping costs to individual countries, as they are not negligible, considering the considerable weight and size.
Package dimensions: 64 x 41 x 26 cm. Weight: approximately 25.00 kg.
