Description from the seller
1909 HMV Monarch Junior External Horn Hand-Crank Gramophone – United Kingdom
This lot features an original 1909 HMV (His Master’s Voice) Monarch Junior hand-crank gramophone, manufactured in the United Kingdom. It is an early tabletop external horn model, bearing the iconic “His Master’s Voice” dog logo, one of the most recognisable symbols in the history of recorded sound.
The gramophone is entirely mechanical and hand-wound, requiring no electricity, representing the technology and craftsmanship of the early 20th century. It is fitted with a large external horn made of red-stained wood, combined with a solid wooden base. The proportions are elegant and well balanced, making it highly suitable for display.
The wooden cabinet and metal components are in good overall condition, showing honest age-related wear consistent with a piece over a century old. No inappropriate modern modifications are visible, and the overall appearance remains coherent and authentic.
The Monarch Junior belongs to HMV’s Monarch Series and was intended for domestic use, offering excellent sound projection while maintaining a more compact and practical size. HMV is regarded as one of the most important manufacturers in gramophone history, and its early models are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
