Description from the seller
Archangel Saint Michael
In the center appears Saint Michael the Archangel, depicted standing and facing forward, with a halo and solemn garments. He holds over his chest the Mandylion (the Image not made by human hands), with the face of Christ and the letters IC XC, emphasizing his mission as defender of the true faith and guardian of divine order.
This iconography is less common than that of Saint Michael the Warrior with a sword, and it belongs to a more contemplative and dogmatic theological tradition.
On both sides of the Archangel, venerable saints are arranged (probably bishops and monks), recognizable by:
Long beards
Liturgical or monastic vestments
shepherd's crooks
Attitude of intercession and prayer
This indicates a synaxarion composition: Saint Michael appears surrounded by the militant and triumphant Church, as a protector of orthodoxy.
Technique: egg tempera on panel
Background: originally gold (very worn)
Style: Russian or Balkan
Probable date: 17th–18th centuries
This icon depicts San Miguel not only as the leader of the heavenly armies but as:
Guardian of the face of Christ
Defender of the dogma
Intercessor between heaven and the Church on earth.
An authenticity certificate, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture of Estonia, is provided.
