Description from the seller

Very old Berber necklace – Moroccan High Atlas (circa 1890–1910)

Weight: 980 g
Length: 79 cm

Superb and impressive ancient traditional necklace from southern Morocco, made of large artisanal beads in natural vegetable resin.
This resin comes from the Boswellia tree, an acacia used in the past in the making of Berber necklaces.
The pearls display a magnificent antique patina with warm hues ranging from golden yellow to deep amber.

The central cylinder, made of very rare black wood, is finely inlaid with hammered copper and silver wires directly into the wood.
One of the hanging pieces bears an engraved date corresponding to 1188 in the Hijri calendar, which is 1775 in the Gregorian calendar, demonstrating the antiquity and the transmission of this jewelry through generations.

Exceptional piece, authentic, not restored, simply cleaned with pure water to preserve its original material.
Shows some typical signs of wear for its age, but in very good overall condition.

This necklace alone tells part of the history and traditions of the desert Berber people.

A unique collectible item.
