African statue of the Punu ethnic group. This African figure was used for ancestor worship. The piece is inlaid with thick white pigment, similar to that often seen on the famous masks of Mukiyu or Okuyi of the Punu and subgroups. On the forehead, the well-known diamond-shaped scarification, also present on the masks, can be seen.
The cavity in the torso was likely used to insert the remains of the deceased, similar to the Kota and Mbete, who made their statues into reliquaries.
