Freia electric sewing machine from the postwar period, compact portable/semi‑industrial with an integrated motor, cast‑iron and bakelite body, made in France, circa 1950–1960, in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear and not in working order.
Description from the seller
an old compact sewing machine from the FREIA brand.
it's a portable/semi-industrial mechanical sewing machine, mid-20th century.
A post-war FREIA electric sewing machine, complete, robust, designed for semi-professional use, with an integrated motor and noble materials (cast iron + Bakelite).
Brand: Freia
The Freia brand is known in Europe for rugged machines, often intended for:
to the artisans,
to the retouchers,
or for intensive domestic use.
Painted cast-iron body (brown/bordeaux color) → strength and stability
Free arm → sewing tubular parts (sleeves, pants), Removable side platform which transforms the free arm into a flat table
The mechanism is 100% electric. The stamped brown rectangular block corresponds to the original electric motor. It is an alternating-current motor, compact, integrated into the base.
Typical configuration of postwar electrified machines
Long lever at the front → manual control or a model-specific accessory (depending on the model)
This type of machine is much more robust than a standard household sewing machine. It was often the backup machine used by tailors, cobblers, or workshops.
It's a machine from the 1940s–1960s, after the Art Deco period and before the widespread use of plastic.
Typical of post-war Europe.
Highly valued in industrial décor, vintage workshops, and among sewing machine collectors.
In excellent condition
