Harald Nielsen was the younger brother of Johanne, the third wife of Georg Jensen. He wanted to become a painter but became involved in Georg Jensen's silversmith workshop, where he started as an apprentice in 1909. From there, he worked his way up to designer/director of the silversmith school. In 1954, he became the director of the smithy and in 1958, artistic director, a position he held until 1962.

The role of Nielsen as head of the apprentice school was particularly important after Jensen's death in 1935. Nielsen ensured that the high quality of the company's design and production was maintained by attracting talented young silversmiths and designers and training them according to the high standards of Georg Jensen Silversmith.
