Antique metal chandelier dating from circa 1850–1900, in Louis XIV style.
Description from the seller
Victorian Period Gas Chandelier, later Electrified (ca. 1850–1900)
Large and impressive chandelier from the Victorian period, dating from approximately 1850–1900.
The chandelier was originally designed for gas lighting and was later converted to electricity, which was a common and historically correct practice at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
The construction is made of solid brass / bronze, richly decorated with scrolling arms, acanthus leaves and floral motifs, characteristic of the Victorian historicist style.
The central structure features a vertical tubular column, typical for gas chandeliers, originally used for gas supply.
The chandelier is fitted with a large opaline glass dome, which diffused the light evenly and was commonly used in gas lighting to soften the brightness of the flame. The glass appears original and is in good condition.
The later electrification has been carried out using the existing structure, respecting the original design. The chandelier is currently electrified and functional.
Details:
• Period: Victorian period
• Date: circa 1850–1900
• Origin: Europe (likely England / France / Germany)
• Materials: Brass / bronze and opaline glass
• Lighting: Originally gas, later converted to electricity
• Condition: Good antique condition, showing age-related patina and wear consistent with its age
This chandelier is a fine example of 19th-century lighting, combining historical authenticity with later electrical adaptation, making it suitable for both collectors and interior use.
