Description from the seller

Rare antique bamboo birdcage – complex multi-level oriental craftsmanship – 20th century.
Description:
Rare and charming bamboo and wood birdcage, handcrafted with traditional Oriental techniques, featuring a complex multi-level architectural structure, increasingly difficult to find in this completeness today.
The cage is distinguished by its elegant configuration of overlapping bodies, with an inclined pitched roof inspired by traditional Chinese architecture. The entire structure is made of slender strips of natural bamboo, carefully shaped and assembled using handcrafted joints, without the use of modern screws.
Distinctive elements:
Multi-level construction, with separate internal environments.
Openable side compartments with a traditional snap-locking system.
Original bamboo pass-through cylindrical stand.
Lower base with a removable bottom for residue collection.
Upper suspension element with original metal ring.
Articulated roof, a rare element in common-use cages.
The ensemble presents a visually striking object, elegant and harmonious, that goes beyond mere utilitarian function to position itself within the realm of artistic craftsmanship.
Era
First half of the 20th century (approximately 1920–1960).
Materials:
Natural bamboo and wood, original metallic elements.
Dimensions
Height: about 50 cm
Maximum width: approx. 36 cm
Depth: approx. 37 cm
Condition status
Good overall condition, with authentic patina of time.
There are slight signs of use, small irregularities, and natural darkening of the bamboo, fully consistent with the age of the item and appreciated in a collector's context.
A stable and complete structure, with minor imperfections that are not significant.
Brief historical note
In China and Southeast Asia, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the breeding of songbirds was a true cultural and social tradition. The most elaborate cages, such as this multi-level specimen, were intended for wealthy owners and reflected aesthetic taste, status, and respect for nature.
Bamboo, a material symbol of balance and longevity, was chosen for its strength and lightness, as well as for its symbolic value. Today, these artifacts are sought after both as antique ethnographic objects and as decorative elements with great personality.
Shipping and packaging
Tracked and insured shipping.
The item will be professionally packed with multilayer protection (bubble wrap, rigid reinforcements, and double cardboard) to preserve the delicacy of the bamboo structure during transportation.
