Dimensions:

24cm x 18cm

Good condition, glossy paper, signs of handling, see photos for details.

Jacques Brel refused to divorce his wife throughout his life. In a letter sent to Thérèse Michielsen, published years later, he reflected on this unconventional love for his ‘Miche’: ‘Perhaps we are now above or rather beyond love? Comrades, kind and tender.’ He dedicated a song to her that became a cult classic, La chanson des vieux amants (The Song of Old Lovers), released in 1967.

Jacques Brel had Maddly Bamy's face engraved alongside his own on the stone adorning his tomb. This was an affront to Thérèse Michielsen, because even though the couple remained together until death separated them, Jacques Brel ended his life with Maddly Bamy, a Guadeloupean actress he met on the set of L'aventure, c'est l'aventure, released in 1972.
