The Orval brewery, located within the abbey, was established in 1931 to finance the large-scale reconstruction works of Orval. From the beginning, the brewery recruited laypeople as workers, including the first master brewer Pappenheimer, to whom the recipe is attributed.
The brewery's commercial policy is aligned with the values upheld by the monastic community. The proceeds from the brand are used for social aid and the maintenance of the buildings.
