Rare Italian porcelain plate from the 1800s, hand-painted in a Neo Empire style, measuring about 21 x 21 cm with a 2.5 cm high edge, in good used condition with small signs of age, featuring a Cambiamonete scene and a gold relief border.
Description from the seller
A fascinating porcelain collectible dish from an antique era, entirely hand-painted with extreme miniature precision. The work belongs to the prestigious iconographic series of the "Mestieri" or "Genre Scenes," typical of elite Italian production in the mid-19th century.
Subject and Decoration:
The center of the plate depicts a "Cambia moneta" (Cambiamonete), a historic trade of great importance in the market squares of the era.
The scene depicts a woman seated behind a wooden counter, busy weighing or exchanging currencies.
A particularly charming feature is the large green umbrella that shelters the workstation, a realistic detail that situates the activity in an outdoor market setting.
In the background, urban architecture is glimpsed, rendered in muted tones typical of Romantic painting on ceramic.
La Tesa (Bordo):
The border is a masterwork of raised-relief decoration in solid gold. It features a rich band in the Restoration style with oval reserves, lattice motifs, and floral scrolls that create a luxurious contrast with the white porcelain.
This plate represents a rare example of nineteenth-century social documentation. The figure of the money changer is a less common subject than other trades, which makes this piece particularly appealing to collectors of numismatic themes or the history of commerce.
