Trumbash knife-sickle Mangbetu
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Total length: 39.7 cm
Materials: wrought iron, wood, twisted copper wire, upholstery nails
Period: early 20th century
Provenance: former collection of Sven-Erik Johansson, Varberg, Sweden
Due to the strong and widespread cultural influence that the Mangbetu exerted over their neighboring populations, this type of weapon was widespread and was known by many names in addition to nagata, including mambele, nagala, nambele, dupa, and trumbash.
Historically, Nagata blades were used in clashes between the Mangbetu and the Zande, but by the 20th century, they were used for peaceful purposes and brandished during ceremonial dances. They were also used as badges of dignity and given as diplomatic gifts. Their fine detail and workmanship gave their wearer a certain distinction and contributed to their reputation and wealth (Schildkrout & Keim, African Reflections: Art From Northeastern Zaire, 1990; Vanderstraete, Monnaies Objets d'Échange, 2016).
Superb Mangbetu trumbash decorated with upholstery nails and twisted yellow copper wire on the handle, with a very beautiful patina of use.
The last four photographs show us a king with his Nagata knife with an offset sickle and men armed with their trumbash.
