AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Duck-shaped red-figure askos – Grand Tour, 19th century
Painted ceramics – manufactory in the Etruscan-Classical taste.
Fascinating red-figure askos in the shape of a duck, made according to models from classical antiquity, inspired by Etrusco-Greek pottery of the 4th century BC, with particular reference to famous museum specimens attributed to the Painter of Montediano, now also housed at the Louvre Museum.
The work sits squarely within the nineteenth-century Grand Tour production, intended for collectors, scholars and cultured travelers, as evidence of the fascination exerted by classical art during the 19th century.
The zoomorphic form is rendered with great elegance: a globular body on an annular foot, an elongated neck, and a stylized beak; a stirrup handle on the back and a decorated rear cylindrical mouthpiece.
The surface is adorned with a rich decoration of red figures on a black background, featuring ornamental motifs of scales, plumage, and dotted rows, typical of the late-classical repertoire.
Winged female figures appear on the hips, depicted in flight, with a diadem, jewelry, and interwoven sandals, iconography attributable to Nikài or winged figures from a symbolic-ritual domain, an element of great compositional refinement and evocative value.
The patina is splendid, warm, and consistent with the object's age; there are normal signs of wear, light abrasions, and small pinpoint losses, all absolutely in keeping with decorative manufacture of this kind and period. The overall condition is solid, stable, and perfectly legible.

Dimensions:
30 × 19 × 13 cm, circa.
Era
19th century – Grand Tour production
Technique
Red-figure painted pottery, ancient techniques; fired in a reduction atmosphere in wood-fired kilns, as the ancient Etruscans did.
Condition status
Good, with signs of wear and small scuffs visible in the photo.
A visually striking object with strong scenic impact, ideal for collectors of classical art, the Grand Tour, decorative archaeology, or to enrich formal spaces with a cultured, evocative piece of great presence.

The photos are an integral part of the description.
Guaranteed careful packaging handled by industry professionals.
