Description from the seller
Academy Architecture and Architectural Review 1908–1909.
First edition – International Academic Architecture
Edited by Alex. Koch, Architect
London – Academy Architecture.
Exceptional set of two large-format volumes, comprising the volumes of the prestigious journal Academy Architecture and Architectural Review, one of the most influential publications of the early 20th century in the field of academic, monumental, and decorative architecture.
Directed by Alexandre Koch, a renowned architect and honorary member of the Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors, this journal held authority among architects, schools of architecture, and European and American artistic institutions.
Published by special permission, this collection presents an official selection of the most remarkable architectural and sculptural works exhibited or designed in the years preceding publication.
The volumes include the major architectural drawings exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, London; the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Architectural and monumental sculptures, integrated into civil and religious projects; a chapter devoted to American architecture, particularly sought after for the study of transatlantic stylistic exchanges at the turn of the century. A critical and illustrated survey of the most significant architectural projects in England, Continental Europe, and the United States.
The ensemble represents a first-rate testimony to Beaux-Arts, Edwardian, and late Art Nouveau architecture, on the eve of the great architectural upheavals of the 20th century.
A great many illustrations in the text and as plates, full-page plates of elevations, perspectives, decorative details. Several color plates, rare for this type of publication. Remarkable print quality, intended for professional use. These volumes were designed as true reference albums, not merely journals.
Period brown half-calf binding.
Two elegantly titled, marbled dishes.
A cohesive and very decorative set.
Solid and well-preserved reliquaries.
Fresh and well-kept interiors
Some light reddening may occur, consistent with age.
Very good overall condition, rare for works as richly illustrated.
Ideal for Academic Architecture & Beaux-Arts, Art Nouveau / Edwardian period
History of European and American architecture, Education & architectural documentation, Specialized libraries, architects, historians, collectors.
A complete set rarely offered across several consecutive volumes, featuring rich iconography and in a high-quality period binding.
