Silk embroidered robe from Asia, dating to the late Qing to early Republic period (circa 1850–1900), featuring a central dragon motif with clouds and waves, sized 68 cm by 105 cm and in used condition with minor signs of age.

Chinese embroidered silk robe, dating to the late Qing Dynasty / early Republic of China, circa 1880–1910.
The robe features a prominent dragon motif surrounded by stylised clouds, waves and auspicious floral elements. The dragon is a traditional symbol of power, protection and cosmic balance, commonly used in ceremonial and high-status garments during the late Qing period.
Materials & technique
Silk ground fabric
Hand embroidery executed with coloured silk threads and metallic threads
Traditional Chinese cut with wide sleeves and side fastening
Entirely hand-sewn, no machine stitching observed
Iconography
Central dragon motif, surrounded by cloud scrolls and auspicious symbols
Floral and wave patterns associated with harmony, longevity and good fortune
Decorative vocabulary consistent with late 19th-century Chinese textiles
Condition
Original antique condition
Visible signs of age and wear consistent with use and age
Areas of colour fading, staining and creasing
Minor fabric stress and wear to embroidery threads, particularly near the collar and upper sections
