Description from the seller
Ellen Andrée — Original albumen photograph (circa 1880)
Description of the lot
Elegant original albumen photograph (period print), taken around 1880, depicting Ellen Andrée (1856–1933), a French actress and key figure in the Paris art scene of the late 19th century. Andrée was a model for numerous painters—especially from the Impressionist circle—and worked closely with artists such as Edgar Degas and Henri Gervex.
The image shows Ellen in a staged pose, wearing a formal dress, with a book in hand and surrounded by floral elements, in clear reference to the pictorial style of Jan Van Beers, a Belgian painter famous for his refined and theatrical female portraits. The vertical inscription “JAN VAN BEERS” confirms this aesthetic inspiration.
Editor and provenance
The photograph was published by J. Simonet, a Paris-based editor active in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in artistic portraits and photographic series inspired by paintings.
The inscription printed on the support indicates:
“J. SIMONET, édit. 92 Rue d’Hauteville Paris”, which places its origin in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, an area of intense publishing activity at the time.
Technical features
• Procedure: Albumin copy (egg-white process, typical of the 19th century).
Dating: Circa 1880.
• Format: 11 × 16 cm. And photo 8.4 × 11.5 cm. Mounted on cardboard.
• Condition: Excellent preservation for its age; warm tone typical of the process.
Justification of the dating
The dating to circa 1880 is supported by:
• The use of the albumin process, at its peak between 1865 and 1885.
• The attire and hairstyle characteristic of the late 1870s and the early 1880s.
• The coincidence with the period of Andrée's greatest activity as a model and actress in the Impressionist circles.
• The similarity to other documented portraits of the artist between 1878 and 1883.
Documentary Value and Collector Value
• It represents the fusion of artistic photography and academic painting.
• Visual testimony of the use of theatrical models in commercial photography.
• A relevant piece for collectors of staged photography, 19th-century female portraits, and material related to the Belle Époque.
