After painstaking work by the fathers to decrypt the formula, it was Father Jerome Maubec, an apothecary at the Grande Chartreuse, who developed the recipe for the elixir. Almost immediately, the potential to transform the recipe's alcoholic remedy into a drink suitable for tasting was evident. After more than 400 years of history, the Carthusian fathers revived the first recipe, calling it ‘Liqueur d'Elixir’ to commemorate the delivery of the manuscript to the Carthusians of Vauvert in 1605.
