The retrospective exhibition held at MoMA in 2005 featured an unprecedented display of over 500 works, making it an unparalleled large-scale exhibition. Though Friedlander has published more photobooks than any artist in history, this volume is a collection originally published in Japan in 1987. It features selections made by Friedlander himself and was edited by Kyoko Yamagishi. Alongside representative works from the 1960s to the 1980s, it includes the “Japanese Cherry Blossom Series” photographed during his four visits to Japan. It features texts by John Szarkowski, the renowned former Director of Photography at MoMA, and poet Takashi Tsujii (Seiji Tsutsumi). Among Friedlander's best-of collections, this photobook is one of the most highly regarded worldwide.
