Description from the seller
Ancient Monumental Alabaster Vase on a Column
Italian Decorative Sculpture – 19th century
Important and scenographic monumental Italian alabaster vase, produced in the 19th century, presented on an elegant column with pedestal, conceived as a sculptural work of great prestige, luxury and collectible value. The ensemble stands out for its size, execution quality and decorative refinement, making it ideal for high-level representative environments.
The vase is characterized by a richly sculptural decoration: the side handles, finely carved, depict winged griffins facing each other, connected by ornamental volutes and acanthus leaves of extraordinary plastic precision. The rim, broad and animated, is carved with deep and dynamic foliate motifs, while the central body is embellished by a grotesque relief mask, framed by plant-form elements that confer strong expressiveness and solemnity to the whole.
The vase rests on a monumental baluster column, spirally turned, with a capital and base richly carved with acanthus leaves, mounted on a solid octagonal plinth that emphasizes its stability and dramatic presence.
The entire piece is fashioned in high-quality alabaster, Volterra alabaster, recognizable by its characteristic translucency, the delicate natural veining, and the extraordinary fineness of the carvings—elements that attest to workmanship of an exceptionally high standard.
On the base there is the signature “D. Del Colombo,” which is likely attributed to Del Colombo, a sculptor active between the late 19th and the early decades of the 20th century in the Tuscan area (Volterra / Florence), known for creating monumental decorative alabaster works intended for prestigious commissions.
A work with exceptional monumental and decorative impact, ideal for historic palaces, grand entrances, galleries, antique sculpture collections, or prestigious settings.
