SPAIN. Paris. Commemorative medal. 1840. Maria Christina of Bourbon (1833-1840).

Medal minted in white metal to commemorate the official visit of Queen Regent Maria Christina of Bourbon, accompanied by her daughter Queen Isabel II, to the Monnaie de Paris on December 4, 1840. The obverse presents the facing and overlapping busts of Maria Christina and Isabel II looking to the right, with an identifying circular legend and the signature BARRE beneath the busts, by the prestigious engraver Jacques-Jean Barre. The reverse shows a legend arranged in six lines within an elegant floral garland tied at the bottom, with a clear commemorative and institutional intent. A piece of great artistic quality and notable historical interest, representative of 19th-century French medallic art and of the diplomatic relations between Spain and France during Maria Christina’s regency. With an approximate diameter of 50 mm and a weight of 64.53 g, preserved in excellent condition and uncirculated.
