A plaque cast using the lost-wax technique, most likely representing a war chief or an envoy, and in any case an important dignitary of the royal court, wearing layered necklaces of long coral beads and a necklace of reversed leopard teeth, characteristic attributes of the court of the Oba, reigning (or king) of the ancient Kingdom of Benin.
The art of Benin is described as court art because it is closely associated with the king, known as Oba. The tradition of bronze court objects from Ifé dates back to the 14th century.
