Description from the seller

Gabon
Kota Songo
Metal, wood, the eyes seem to be made of bone.
Height: 210mm + base 24mm
Width: 70mm
Depth: 55mm

Small reliquary measuring 21cm in height excluding the base.

The Kota people mainly live in the east of Gabon and the west of Congo.

Many Kota reliquary figures exist. They share common features, including a face made of metal sheets plated on a wooden core and a handle in the shape of a diamond.

The reliquary baskets or 'bwété' were kept at the back of the chief's hut. The 'bwété' were revered through offerings and prayers aimed at bringing prosperity to the clan. At the top of the 'bwété' was placed a reliquary statue featuring a highly stylized body in the shape of a diamond and a head covered with metal.
