Natural raw Welo Opal from Ethiopia (Welo region), 19.00 ct (≈3.80 g), dimensions about 26 × 20 × 8 mm, untreated.
Description from the seller
19.00 ct 26.00 x 20.00 x 8.00 mm Finest Rainbow Welo rough opal (natural opal)
2.60 cm larger XL Opal!
3.80 grams - with fiery red, blue, and green sparkle - please view this opal under magnification with strong illumination - it is full of fiery red and sparkling green and intensely metallic blue light reflections - please note: the play of color is only strongly visible under bright lighting or direct sunlight!
This auction features this impressive natural rough opal from the world-famous Welo opal mines in Ethiopia. This piece impresses with its immense size of 2.60 cm and 19.00 carats, as well as a lively, multicolored fire that is typical for high-quality Welo opals.
The opal displays an intense play-of-color with bright green, yellow, orange, and red flashes that sweep through the material in a banded and expansive way. Especially under direct sunlight or bright LED light, the stone reveals its full visual presence and unveils a dynamic, constantly changing color play.
In diffused light the fire remains visible, but naturally appears much calmer and softer—a typical and appreciated behavior of untreated Welo opals.
The semitransparent to transparent base matrix gives the opal depth and ensures that the play of color does not merely appear superficial, but seems to glow from within the stone. The natural, rough form makes this specimen particularly interesting for both collectors and lapidaries, as several cutting orientations are conceivable.
Welo-Opals are known for their hydrophobic properties and, due to their range of colors, purity, and relatively young discovery history, are among the most sought-after opals on the international gemstone market.
