Bronze Age bronze axehead with a short cylindrical shaft-hole and a downward-curving blade, 11 cm long by 3.6 cm high, in good condition and dating to circa 1200–600 BC, from a private collection with provenance to the London Collection and acquired in 2000.
Description from the seller
A fine Bronze Age bronze axe head featuring a short, cylindrical shaft-hole from which the blade extends in a downward curve from the narrow neck. The cutting edge displays rounded edges. There are typical signs of ageing such as chipping to the edges, minor scratches and earthy encrustations across the surface.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites settled in the Western Asiatic region. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of these bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Most of these bronze items have been recovered in funerary contexts.
Measurements: L 11cm x H 3.6cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990 - present.
