Baluch Afghan, a hand-knotted wool-on-cotton carpet from Pakistan, 137 cm by 90 cm, in very good condition and professionally cleaned.
Description from the seller
Pile: 100% wool
Warp & weft: 100% cotton
Quality: Hand-knotted
Knot count: approx. 160,000 / m2
Pile height: 8 mm
Origin: Afghanistan
The Baluch carpets (also Belutsch) come from a nomadic people in the Baluchistan region, a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They sustain themselves through agriculture, carpet production, and sheep, goat, and camel herding. Traditionally, the carpets are made from sheep wool or goat hair from the tribes’ own flocks. Due to their tribal origin, the carpets are generally smaller because of high transport needs, feature geometric patterns or stylized floral motifs, and are hand-knotted. The classic dark red, brown, or blue backgrounds are often contrasted with lively patterns in white, ivory, yellow, or orange tones. Baluch carpets are comparatively thin, yet rather tightly woven, making them soft and flexible—perfect for daily use and frequent movement. Even today these carpets offer an excellent price-performance ratio as well as outstanding durability.
