Pakistan; Baluch Afghan, hand-knotted carpet 145 × 86 cm, wool on cotton, ca. 160,000 knots per m², pile height 8 mm, 21st century, very good condition, professionally cleaned.
Description from the seller
Pile: % wool
Weft & Warp: 100 % cotton
Quality: hand-knotted
Knot density: approx. 160,000 / m2
Pile height: 8 mm
Origin: Afghanistan
The Baluch carpets (also Belutsch) come from a nomadic people of the Baluchistan region, a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They live from agriculture, carpet production, as well as sheep, goat and camel husbandry. Traditionally the carpets are made from sheep wool or goat hair by the tribes’ own herds. Due to their tribal origin the carpets are generally smaller because of the high transport requirements, feature geometric patterns or stylized floral motifs, and are hand-knotted. The classic dark red, brown or blue backgrounds are often contrasted with lively patterns in white, ivory, yellow or orange tones. Baluch carpets are comparatively thin, yet rather densely woven, making them soft and flexible. Perfect for daily use and a lot of movement. Even today these carpets still offer an excellent price-performance ratio as well as outstanding durability.
