Description from the seller
AMAZONIA signed with his 'collector' bag. For six years, Sebastião Salgado traveled through the Brazilian Amazon and captured the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region: the forest, the waterways, the mountains, and the peoples who live there – an irreplaceable heritage of humanity.
In the preface of this book, Salgado writes: 'For me, it is the last frontier. A mysterious universe where the power of nature is felt like nowhere else on Earth. Here unfolds infinitely the forest that shelters one-tenth of all animal and plant species. The world's largest natural laboratory.'
Salgado visited about a dozen indigenous tribes organized into tiny communities across the world's largest rainforest. He witnessed the daily life of the Yanomami, Asháninka, Yawanawá, Suruwahá, Zo’é, Kuikuro, Waurá, Kamayurá, Korubo, Marubo, Awá, and Macuxi: the warmth of their family bonds, their hunting and fishing practices, how they prepare and share meals, their remarkable talent for face and body painting, the importance of their shamans, their dances, and their rituals.
Sebastião Salgado dedicated this book to the indigenous peoples of the Amazon region of Brazil: 'I sincerely hope, with all my heart, all my energy, and everything that lives intensely within me, that fifty years from now, this book does not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazon must continue to exist.'
