Description from the seller
John Lautner
by Barbara-Ann Campbell-Lange
Edited by Peter Gossel
John Lautner learned architecture through practical experience rather than through traditional academic training. He desired continuous change and passionate dedication. In 1933 he joined Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West. Later, with his own studio in Los Angeles, he became Wright's only pupil who not only adopted the master's ideas but also developed them further. For 50 years Lautner experimented with new building methods and inventive formal solutions, and of his 188 projects as many as 113 were realized, most of which were private residences. The audacity of these projects astonished his contemporaries and remains so to this day. Many of his buildings, such as the famous Chemosphere, a house built on a single concrete column above Los Angeles in 1960, ended up being regarded as the symbol of a new architecture with limitless possibilities.
