Antique Aubusson-style tapestry in wool, 135 by 90 cm, made in France and dating to around the 1950s, in good used condition with small signs of aging and stains and framed.
Description from the seller
Old French or Flemish tapestry, Aubusson-style from the mid-20th century, ready to hang. This tapestry features soft colors and is carefully woven in wool, with about 30 knots per inch. In very good condition with small signs of rust at the side mounting points on the frame, indicative of its antiquity.
A timeless piece inspired by the charming tapestries of the 18th century.
This tapestry depicts a pastoral scene with several figures, probably mythological or allegorical, engaged in activities amid lush vegetation and blooming flowers. The central figures appear to be women adorned in flowing garments, with one reaching out to pluck flowers while another seems to be gathering a branch, as well as a child holding a branch; in the background a shepherd playing a flute while tending the sheep and two women dancing, all set against a scene of trees and a soft, hazy landscape. The tapestry is framed.
Based on the artistic style, the depiction of the figures, and the tapestry technique, it is likely that this piece is of European origin, possibly France or Flanders, and dated to the nineteenth century or the early twentieth century. This period was marked by a revival of interest in pastoral and mythological scenes, inspired by classical and baroque styles, often depicted in tapestries and paintings.
The use of rich, earthy colors, the idealized representation of nature, and the figures in motion suggest an influence from tapestry traditions established centuries ago, but executed with techniques and artistic sensibilities developed later. The decorative frame is also typical of furniture and interior decoration pieces of the time.
